We’d run into each other accidentally, but in this day and age, it doesn’t take much more than that to escalate into something more.
Without even thinking, I’d grabbed his hand as if to shake it and placed my opposite hand on his shoulder.
“Hey, I’m so sorry,” I said. “Are you okay?”
Though my apology and tone definitely helped defuse any potential situation, my lack of fear in initiating physical contact with him helped even more.
Forget the fact that I put myself in a position to defend myself by grabbing his hand and shoulder. It was that we’re so unused to being comfortable with that type of contact. We don’t know what to do when it happens.
Jiu jitsu solves that problem.
Rolling with partners you trust, allowing yourself to be in those sometimes uncomfortable positions and situations takes away that apprehension.
And not just for adults. It’s never too early to learn to remove that fear.
